Juan Venado Island

We made an early start and took the short journey out to the Pacific Coast to enjoy a boat trip to Juan Venado Island.  This barrier island measures 22km in length and is an ecologically important mangrove forest or swamp. The island is an important nesting site for many water birds; purple heron, tricoloured heron, whimbrel, pelican, egrets, kingfishers, as well as a vital breeding ground for rare turtles. A conservation programme is in place to protect the turtle, and we were fortunate enough to hold a newly hatched Paslama turtle.
